"Making A Clean Cut"
Nature loves a clean cut,
Humans, not so much.
Don't flowers breathe easier
when their bottoms are neatly trimmed?
Don't plants smile
when someone carefully takes a cutting
for new generations?
Doesn't hardwood welcome new neighbors
when they are artfully joined with other families?
Don't forests recover after lightning fires,
emerging stronger than before?
Ah, but the Superior Human,
that's another story . . .
We hate a
bad first date,
wobbly audition,
tense job interview,
disappointing performance review,
Unable to see these rejections as nothing more than
a poor match.
Messy, messy, not clean.
We become even more despondent with each
firing,
eviction,
band breakup,
forced relocation,
divorce,
serious illness,
Unable to grasp the essential
everlasting lesson from each,
spiraling downward,
Messy, messy, not clean.
We're just wired to revel in drama
and self-pity.
Like a moth to a flame,
we just can't help it.
Until . . .
The pain becomes unbearable,
and we are forced to look at our very
Nature.
